The 100 Mile Trial

Shaun & Neesh's 100 mile
reflections
For Shaun and I
the 100 mile diet trial coincided with a school hiking camp around Wilson's
Prom - not ideal 100miling! So the week after the hike we ended up eating
about 70-80% from within 100miles.
Whilst our household
already aims to buy local seasonal produce from within 100 miles or Victoria
(yep - bananas are now a luxury that we rarely ever eat!), it was really
exciting to be part of a group of people who care about where their food
comes from. It was informative to learn where soy beans and oats are grown,
and whether we could purchase produce directly from the wholesalers.

Whilst it is currently
incredibly difficult for us inner-city Melbournians to eat within 100
miles and maintain a balanced vegan diet, one of the key successes of
the trial was connecting with local producers. For example, we have made
ongoing changes to our olive oil and honey purchasing by connecting with
the supplier, buying in bulk and sharing it with friends.
We are now keen to
investigate Community Supported Agriculture in Victoria.
