Animal testing rests on a logical contradiction. It is ‘because animals are like us’ that experiments are useful, yet it is ‘because animals are not like us’ that makes it morally okay to experiment on animals?
Great news! From July 2017, Australia will join the European Union, Israel, Norway, India and New Zealand which has a ban on animal tested cosmetics. Any products that have been tested on animals or contain ingredients that have been tested on animals will be prohibited from sale (see details).
In Australia 6.5 million animals are used for research and teaching each year, many in testing cosmetic products. Animal toxicity tests involve blinding and poisoning animals. They are subjectively assessed and the results can vary depending upon the species, age, sex and condition of individual animals. Testing is not mandatory in Australia, however manufacturers are asked to conduct whatever tests are appropriate, in their opinion, to establish their cosmetics or household products are safe.
In March 2009 Europe introduced a ban on testing animals for cosmetic products where non-animal alternatives are available in addition to banning the sale of animal tested cosmetics no matter where they are produced.
A Choice investigation (May 2013) has found that major cosmetic brands are failing to inform customers that their beauty products are tested on animals in China. Skin and eye irritation tests must be conducted on animals in order for cosmetic products to be sold in China, which are paid for by manufacturers. > ABC News (vid, 6/5/13). > See companies list compiled by Choice.
India has announced that it will implement a ban on animal testing for cosmetics (1/7/13).
