Jean Louis Langlois –
Born in France 1838 - died in Australia 1919
(as researched by Rhonda Langlois…… a work in progress!)
18 May 1838. Louis Langlois was born in France. On his marriage certificate in 1868 in Australia he declares his place of birth to be Lyon, France. On the birth certificate of his first born in 1870 he declares his birthplace as de I’sere, France.
The city of Lyon is not in the district of Isere. His birthplace could be in a village or town (name not known) in the district of Isere, in the region of Rhone Alps, France, near to the city of Lyon. You need to look at a map of France with the districts shown to appreciate this theory. A Frenchman with an accent would find it easier to say he was from Lyon, a city heard of in Australia, than to say he was from Isere and a village perhaps that was hard to understand. Or he could have been born in Lyon and moved soon after to Isere – or vice-versa! (NB a descendants 2007 visit to Lyon, could find no trace of him!)
Louis states his fathers name as Francois Langlois, sailmaker & later tile layer, and his mothers maiden name as Marie GUERRE. (or Guirre)
Nb: Louis always gives only one first name, however on Henriettas death certificate his name is recorded as Jean Louis Langlois. The first born male names after this have been handed down as Francois Louis Jean Langlois (we still have two –father & son – living in Charters Towers and Perth 2008)
Family lore passed down states that someone in Louis family was a Lord Mayor, in France. I heard Mayor of Lyon, but I have been sent a list of all past Lord Mayors in Lyon and there is no Langlois. I have found a record of a Mayor of the town of Allevard, in the district of Isere from 30/11/1834 to 1840. His name is Antoine Auguste GUERRE. This man could possibly be the father (or uncle) of Marie Guerre. This surname is not a very common one in France so the likely-hood is very possible. The next step is to get information from France on the children on Antoine Guerre and find a link.

1858. Louis departs from the northern French port town of Le Havre about to make a journey for life. His name is found on the passenger list (1) for the ship ‘Zurich’ which arrived in New York on 6/4/1858). The average westbound trip was 35 days. He did not travel with any of his family. It is possible though that he travelled with a friend, fellow Frenchman Eugene Humbert age 21. Eugene stayed in USA and joined the Union Army. He died in a conflict on 13/5/1864.
1860. Louis is now 22 and is next documented arriving in the port of Melbourne aboard the barque ‘Windward’ (2, 2a, 2b sketch of Windward, ). This sailed from New York and arrived 22/4/1860. He appears to have been travelling alone. I have a copy of the ships passenger manifest.
1863 Louis married Annie Hall who was born in 1840 in Yorkshire, England. Her father is listed as Unknown Hall, and her mother unknown. I can find no record of the marriage of Louis & Annie in Victoria. It is possible he travelled and met her in another state, I am still searching for a marriage record.
1863-1867 At some time in this period Louis and Annie were living on a block of land at Jika Jika (now a part of Coburg). Louis describes himself as a gardener and would leave home in the early hours of the morning to sell his produce at the Melbourne markets.
1867. Annie died at home in her bed on the morning of 28/12/1867. From her inquest and Louis signed statement (3) we can learn that she had complained of pain in her shoulder for a couple of months. On Christmas day 1867 she complained of pain in her chest. She was quite unwell on Friday the 27th December and went to bed. Louis arose early to go to the market. When he left Annie was awake in bed and not complaining. He arrived back home at 9am to find the door shut and was unable to rouse her. He fetched a neighbour who advised Louis that Annie was dead. At the inquest the cause of death was found to be ‘Inflamation of the Lungs’. Annie’s death certificate (4) states she was 27 years old and had been living in Victoria for 5 years. She was buried at Pentridge Cemetery (part of the now Coburg Pine Ridge Cemetery) on 30/12/1867. There were no children.
1868. Louis didn’t waste any time. Just 7 months later, he is marries again on 2/8/1868 age 29. He married Henrietta CLARKE, age 17, born in 1852 in Melbourne. Louis now states his profession as a confectioner. The marriage took place in Fitzroy. (5) Henrietta’s parents are Richard Thomas CLARKE, printer and Margaret DREW. Henrietta parents: Richard Clarke was born in London, Middlesex, England in 1810. He emigrated to Australia in 1838, arriving in Sydney. I have not yet found his passage details. Margaret Drew was born between 1818-1821 in Cork, Ireland. She emigrated in 1834 on the ‘Duchess of Northumberland” which was a ship carrying single female bounty emigrants from England & Ireland. Margaraet gave her age as 17, however she was possible only 14 according to her age on her death record. Margaret was illiterate (she signed her marriage certificate with an X mark) so therefore probably did not know her age. Margaret obtained work for Mrs Brookes for 9 pund per annum. Richard & Margaret were married in Melbourne in 1840 and had 10 children, Henrietta being the 7th.
1870. First child Beatrice Eugenie LANGLOIS born 3/3/1870 at 16 Young St. Fitzroy.
Louis is listed as a Pastry-cook age 31. (Maybe the Eugenie was for his friend on the ship?) (6)
1872. Second child Louis Francis LANGLOIS born 7/3/1872 at Kay Street, Victoria Ward, City of Melbourne. There is a story a twin was still-born but this has not been verified.
Louis Snr is still a Pastry-cook, now age 33. (7)
1873. Third child Florence Sibthorpe LANGLOIS born 16/7/1873 Kent St. Fitzroy, County of Bourke, Melbourne. (8) Florence’s middle name (Thimpthorpe, Sibthor, Simpthorpe) is spelt in various ways on different records but Sibthorpe is the correct..
1875. 4th child Edith Maud LANGLOIS born 1875 : Neal Street, Victoria Ward, City of Melbourne, County of Bourke. (9) Louis Snr is now a Cook age 37. Henrietta is 24.
1877. 5th child Lily May LANGLOIS born, 23/3/1877 at Station Street, Victoria Ward, City of Melbounre, County of Bourke. (10)
Louis Snr is again a Confectioner. At some stage he owned and ran a Chocolate shop in Royal Arcade, Melbourne.
1882. 6th child Hugh Loftus LANGLOIS, 9/4/1882 at No. 5 Clifton Terrace, Princess Street, Victoria Ward, City of Melbourne, County of Bourke. (11)
Louis Snr is still a Confectioner at age 42.
1888. 7th child Claribel Ermine LANGLOIS, born 5/8/1888 at 26 L…. Villa, Beaconsfield Parade, City of South Melbourne, County of Bourke. (12)
Louis Snr is a Confectioner aged 50. Henrietta is 37.
At some stage Louis owned and ran a chocolate shop in Royal Arcade, Melbourne. I have been unable to locate any records from the present owners of Royal Arcade or the Melbourne City Council, however Louis Great Grand-daughter Clarice who lives in Melbourne knows which shop it was as she was taken there by her mother Ruby who described Henrietta as a horrid lady and other stories handed down to cousins do not show her favourably!
1902. On the 21/1/1902 Louis Langlois aged 63 is Naturalised as an Australian Citizen. He is documented as a cook and living in South Melbourne. (13) Louis was at one stage a cook at Government House, Melbourne.
1919. Louis Langlois dies aged 80. Cause of death is Chronic myocarditis and cardiac failure. He died in Melbourne Hospital, Gipps Ward, City of Melbourne, County of Bourke.(14) Not long before he died he sat up and sang the French national anthem in his hospital bed. He apparently had a lovely singing voice. (this information supplied by Clarice, Melbourne) His address is 63 Cobden Court, South Melbourne. He is survived by his wife, and at least 6 of his children. (not sure of Claribel)
Louis was buried on 17/1/1919 at the Fawkner Cemetry, in the Roman Catholic Compartment D, Grave # 631. (15)
(Henrietta was buried on 16/7/1938 at the Fawkner Cemetry , Church of England section, Compartment R, Grave 1242.) (16)
· The ages above were taken from birth, marriage and death certificates as well as shipping lists.
· The names in red are those I cannot read properly or have not been verified.
· All of my information (apart from Louis birthplace) is verified with marriage/birth/death certificates. I have copies of documents as numbered, (1) and will happily provide others with a copy if asked. The inquest for Annie Hall has been photocopied by PROV Victoria and is not easy to read when copied. I will type out the contents when time permits.
I am constantly searching for the birth of Louis Langlois in France. As it is frustrating & time consuming I have taken to searching for living cousins here in Australia who may have different information to what I have. I am also planning a trip to France in May 2008.
My search has now uncovered several living 2nd cousins of mine and each ‘find’ brings new family stories.
If anyone has further information I would greatly appreciate receiving it. If you have any ‘family stories’ with a different or similar slant I also want these. If you find any errors in ‘my story’ please also tell me. If you have photos or documents I will happily pay for copies.

Family stories passed down through various branches and re-told to me by cousins recently:
· Possible reason for leaving France : Louis was cut off from his Roman Catholic family after turning Protestant: Source: Robert Leslie –Brisbane.
However Louis was buried in the Roman Catholic section and his wife in the C of E.
· Louis would bring hidden treats out from his chocolate shop to give to his grand-children who were waiting with Henrietta for him to finish work, always with “don’t let your grandmother know!” source: Margaret McKelvie- Melbourne.
· During the Franco-Prussion wasr 1870-1870 Louis wanted to go back to France – but couldn’t because Henrietta hid his good trousers. Source: Hilary Nouse - Carringbah.
· In his later years Henrietta made him sleep on a mattress on the floor in another room because he snored.
