Saving whales
Anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd has abandoned Antarctic whale wars with Japanese boats because of Japan's use of military-grade tracking technology. Since the 1986 IWC moratorium on commercial whaling, Japan has been whaling under scientific research permits. In July this year however they passed legislation with plans to resume whaling and upgrade their fleet. Find out more and petition Japan and others to end whaling.
Saving native species
Last week, Friends of the Earth Melbourne released a Lawless Logging report, investigating 27 unlawful native forest logging operations in Victorian protected threatened species habitat. Logging is pushing endangered wildlife further towards extinction (including koalas in NSW and these 21 animals that are only found in south-eastern Australia). Saving orangutans
The main threat to orangutans is the expansion of palm oil plantations that destroy their habitat. Unfortunately it's not easy to avoid palm as it is found in almost 50% of packaged supermarket products yet remains mostly hidden as there is no labelling requirement. The decision to introduce mandatory palm oil labelling is currently before the Senate. Find out how you can keep the pressure on ministers to change current labelling laws.
Be inspired: Protecting endangered species
September 7th was National Threatened species day. In this month's Be Inspired feature we showcase people working to protect the giraffe, orang-utan and whale. These animals are threatened by habitat destruction, illegal hunting and pollution. Saving the Great Barrier Reef
There are many reasons why a wide range of groups are opposed to the proposed Adani coalmine in Queensland. One of the most critical is that it will accelerate the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef - already suffering from coral bleaching due to rising water temperatures.
