Shop Ethical! app reveals the world behind your wardrobe

29th November, 2013

Australia's most popular digital guide to ethical shopping now goes beyond the supermarket with the release of their long-awaited clothing data. The Shop Ethical! app provides consumers with a new level of transparency, allowing access to over 4,000 products with information on the social and environmental track record of the companies behind the brands.

This clothing update enables consumers to see how their favourite fashion labels are responding to issues such as Uzbek cotton, building safety in Bangladesh, water pollution, and paying a living wage.

Issues of worker safety and exploitation, common in the clothing industry, were highlighted by the tragic deaths of 1,100 workers in the collapse of the Rana Plaza garment factory in Bangladesh in April. Up until now consumers have had little ability to evaluate the wider impacts of their purchases or make choices which better reflect the things they value.

Nick Ray of the Ethical Consumer Group says “By shopping ethically consumers can send a strong message for change and help support the practices that make our world a better place to live in.”

The Shop Ethical! app uses the latest data from the website. Company ratings are based on information gathered from over 150 key sources including the work of organisations such as Clean Clothes Campaign, Free2Work, Greenpeace, Ethical Clothing Australia, and Responsible Sourcing Network.

With over 15,000 downloads of the app and 120,000 copies of the Shop Ethical! supermarket pocket-guide already in the hands of Australian consumers, this latest update will further assist people in changing their world for the better - one good choice at a time!

The Shop Ethical! app has been developed by the Ethical Consumer Group and Outware Mobile. Available for $4.49 from the App Store and Google Play.
