Eulogy of Joy Gould Family and Friends of Mrs. Joy Gould gathered together to write their memories of this lovely lady. They discovered the difficulties of capturing this beautiful spirited person in mere words. This is what they wrote. Joy Irene, born 22.3.1927 in Lake Grace, W. Australia, where her father Rupert, farmed and was a wool classer. The Tunney family were old pioneers of this area and there was an early Roadhouse run by the Tunneys near Kojonup with a small town and street named after them. The family moved to Dromana, Victoria in 1935 where Rupert set up and managed a factory for Passiflora Plantations. Rupert was a great ideas man and produced two cordials named Passilla and Pinella. They later moved to the Main Ridge property where Rupert established a passion fruit plantation. The factory used the fruit. Joy attended Dromana State School where she did well. In those days State School education finished at year 8 and Joy was dux of this school. Like her father young Joy was full of ideas and on one occasion, while her Mother was absent she reorganized the household furniture. Then in 1941 she attended McRobertsons Girls High School. This was an honour reserved for the best students, as secondary education was in short supply. In 1942 Joy's father died suddenly and with this event Joy's aim of becoming a schoolteacher also perished. At that this time there was no welfare safety net for families in tragic circumstances. The family consisting of Joy's mother Doris, elder sister Doreen and younger siblings Sybil and Robert to East Malvern where Joy attended Business College. Joy and Doreen began their careers in the city For some years she was secretary to the manager at Dewez Wool Export Company. Wool was a most premier commodity at this time and international business was conducted in French. Joy later worked as secretary for Mr. Norman at Norman's corner Store in Bourke St. . Once again, importing of fabrics would have conducted in French. Joy spent many weekends with her school friend Olive Williamson at their farm at Taggerty, where she enjoyed the freedom of country life. With Olive and other local girls, she enjoyed the dances at the Taggerty hall. It was here that she met her future husband Lloyd Gould, and so began her long association with the Steavenson Valley. Friday Night Lloyd would pick her up from Norman's Corner Store in his timber truck and convey her to Marysville to his parents home in Falls Road. It was here she experienced the fun of Lloyd's sisters and brother. (Olive later became Olive McNair of Alexandra). Joy and Lloyd were married December 1952. Their wedding was held at………… A few years after this and the subsequent birth of their eldest daughter Llynette, Joy was the driving force in beginning the Marysville Kindergarten. Further association and in the position of either secretary, president or treasurer, Joy was associated with many local organizations, often with excellent results. Organizations such as school parents clubs, Marysville Scouts of which she was a Cub Leader, Wirreander Festival and the festivals flower show and floral carpet. Both Kellock and Darlingford boards of management and designing their gardens, and the Anglican Church Ladies Guild and others. These Organizations benefited from both business and personal donations and resources. She was known for her energy, generosity, ideas and even temper. |
