Just in time for the holiday shopping season, The Story of Electronics introduces you to the design strategy that has us dumping our electronics every 18 months and rushing out to buy new ones: It's called Designed for the Dump, and it's a major problem for our planet and our wallets. This is the story where we challenge CEOs and the electronics industry to take back their products once we're done with them, offering a real solution to the growing problem of toxic e-waste. Be part of the smarter design movement and help spread the word at StoryofElectronics.org. |
In Australia, electronic waste (e-waste) is the fastest growing source of waste, growing three times faster than regular waste and guaranteed to increase with the switch from analogue to digital television. Presently only 3% of e-waste is recycled. Landfilling e-waste is hazardous to the environment and human health. Substances such as arsenic, cadmium, lead, mercury and nickel have been associated with diseases such as cancer and neurological disorders. Our local e-waste isn’t just accumulating in our landfills, but is often shipped oversees to countries such as China, Nigeria and Indonesia, where it threatens the health of these communities.
