Compact fluorescent bulbs consume much less energy than the incandescent equivalent (normally around 80% less) and so reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Australian Federal Government has now banned the importing of incandescent lighting.
However compact fluoros do contain toxic mercury, a neurotoxin that can cause kidney and brain damage, a tiny amount — about 5 milligrams, or barely enough to cover the tip of a pen — but that is enough to contaminate up to 24,000 liters of water beyond safe drinking levels. Ironically, there are presently no recycling or disposal programs for CFLs in Australia.

- Change over those globes that are turned on for a longer that 4 hours a day. These will save money on your power bill and need changing less frequently. Some compact fluros are rated at 10,000 hours or more. That is 10 times the life of a normal light globe. [Which Bulbs to replace with CFLs]
- Not all CFL bulbs are equal. Choose good bulbs that contain a fraction of the toxic mercury in most CFLs and last up to 2 to 3 times as long. [Green Lightling Guide]
- Be aware of safety and health issues associated with CFs. The mercury content is hazardous to humans, and can be inhaled, and absorbed through the skin, and can cause both chronic and acute poisoning. [Health concerns]
- Safe disposal. See government recommendations for disposal and give feedback. [Government website]
