Compact fluorescent bulbs consume much less energy than the incandescent equivalent (normally around 80% less) and so reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The Australian Federal Government has now banned the importing of incandescent lighting. However compact fluoros do contain toxic mercury, a neurotoxin that can cause kidney and brain damage, a tiny amount — about 5 milligrams, or barely enough to cover the tip of a pen — but that is enough to contaminate up to 24,000 liters of water beyond safe drinking levels.
